At the Mission Viejo dental practice of Dr. Robert Milner, our entire team is devoted to helping you prevent dental problems before they start. We believe that with a few smart habits, you can take control of your oral health and reduce your risk of developing cavities, gum disease and other problems.
Commit to a Thorough Oral Hygiene Routine
The first line of defense against cavities and gum disease is committing to meticulous brushing and flossing habits. You should brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day, for at least two minutes each time, to remove leftover food particles and plaque. Floss or use an interdental cleaner (like a WaterPik) at least once a day to dislodge plaque and food debris lodged between the teeth and along the gumline.
Drink More Water
Drinking water helps to rinse away food particles and neutralize the acids in the mouth. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water with fluoride is particularly good, as the fluoride helps to protect teeth from developing decay.
Avoid sugary, starchy foods like candy, chips, pretzels and pastries, as the starch and sugar feed bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease. Choose teeth-friendly foods like fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, cheese and yogurt.
Smoking and using tobacco are terrible for your oral and overall health. Not only can smoking stain your teeth, it can also lead to gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancer.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly for Check-Ups and Cleanings
Regular professional cleanings are key to reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Our hygienists have special techniques and instruments to remove plaque and food particles that a toothbrush and floss can miss. We can also detect problems in their early stages, when they are more easily treatable.
Ask Us about Fluoride and Sealants
Supplemental fluoride treatments and the application of sealants may be useful in helping protect your teeth from decay. During your check-ups, you can inquire as to whether we recommend either of these options for you.
