Foods to Avoid Right After Teeth Whitening

A teeth whitening treatment can completely revitalize your smile. It’s important to avoid certain foods following your teeth whitening procedure, however. The first 24 hours are particularly important: you’ll want to avoid any sort of “staining” food.

Dr. Robert Milner is a highly sought-after dentist based out of Mission Viejo. With nearly three decades of experience, Dr. Milner is committed to providing the very best in dental care. Read on to get his advice on which foods you should avoid right after teeth whitening.

Coffee and Red Wine

During the first few days after teeth whitening, your teeth are especially vulnerable to harsh foods. Coffee is acidic, meaning it eats away at the enamel of your teeth. As the enamel wears away, microscopic pockets and ridges form. Those pockets and ridges become discolored and dark (“stained”).

Red wine should also be avoided.

If you’re in need of caffeine in the morning, a cup of clear herbal tea is a good alternative. Avoid all acidic drinks with food coloring as well!

Soft Drinks and Juices

Like coffee, soft drinks are acidic. The enamel of your teeth is especially vulnerable right after your teeth whitening procedure. Juices, particularly fruit juices, are equally damaging to your teeth right after whitening. The high sugar content of fruit juice (especially citrus fruits) is not ideal for your enamel immediately after a whitening procedure.

If you’re in need of some fruit, opt for a banana.

Colored Foods and the “White Shirt Test”

As a general rule, avoid any food that has natural or added color. Don’t consume any food or liquids like:

  • Red meats
  • Soy sauce
  • Chocolate
  • Beer

It is also important to avoid cigarettes for the first 24 hours. The “white shirt test” is a good rule of thumb to follow. If a food or drink would leave a stain on a white shirt, avoid it for the first 24 hours.
